ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Think you’re a weather buff who knows their stuff? See if you can correctly guess this WFXR Weather Trivia question!
Is it possible to have thunder without lightning?
Did you guess correctly? Look below for the answer:
Lightning is extremely hot; the lightning discharge can rapidly heat the surrounding air to temperatures as high as 50,000°F! Because the air is so hot, it expands. Immediately after the flash, the air begins to cool and contracts quickly.
The rapid expansion and compression of the air results in a sound wave, known as thunder. In other words, it’s not possible to have thunder without lightning.
Now, it is possible for you to see lightning and not hear thunder. This occurs when the lightning is far away. The lightning will still create thunder, but the sound may not reach your ears due to the distance.
