When was the last time the National Weather Service (NWS) Blacksburg Service area observed Extreme Drought?

As of Nov. 14, 2023, parts of Rockbridge, Bath, and Highland counties are experiencing Extreme Drought. Areas in Extreme Drought could expect major crop losses and/or widespread water shortages or restrictions.

NWS says this is the first time since 2008 that Extreme Drought has been observed in the service area.
