Strong to severe storms start the new work week & will be followed by hot & humid conditions for the rest of the week.
A warm front will lift through the region today opening the door for more hot and humid air to start flowing into the region today. Temperatures will soar up to near 90° with dew points moving up through the 60s in the wake of the warm frontal passage setting the atmosphere up for some possible fireworks this afternoon and evening as a cold front then gets pulled through the region. As the front approaches we will see showers and thunderstorms begin firing up heading into the afternoon and continuing throughout the day and into the evening. It looks as if a more organized line of storms could move through during the early to mid-evening with heavy rain and damaging winds still very possible. The SPC has included our entire region under a marginal and slight risk for severe weather with damaging winds being the most likely threat but with large hail also possible. The SPC has not included our area under their tornado threat but that threat for us is still not zero for the day. Regardless, you’ll need to be very weather aware this afternoon and evening for those potential storms. In the wake of the frontal passage tonight we’re expecting gusty west and northwesterly winds to kick up.
The front will move offshore by tomorrow morning but the gusty winds will continue for at least the first half of the day before they subside as high pressure builds in for a couple of days. Heat and humidity will linger through the week with highs well into the 80s and low 90s all the way into the weekend. We’ll have quite a few dry days this week with just a minute chance for an isolated shower or thunderstorm to fire up in the heat of the day but with high pressure in place and an upper level ridge in place across the eastern half of the country most days it will be very hard for showers to break the cap.
It’s that time of year that I need to remind folks to please, NEVER leave your kids or pets in the car. The interior of your car will heat up extremely quickly and reach dangerous, if not deadly, levels in a very short period of time. If you want to take the dog for a car ride than make it a dedicated ride for them, don’t stop for groceries or to pick something up. It only takes a few minutes for the temperature in your vehicle to reach those dangerous levels. If you have a small child be sure you double check the back seat when you get out.
