Pinpoint Weather: Winter-like Thursday before milder conditions return for Christmas

Weather Blog

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Seasonable conditions are in the forecast for Thursday, but Southwest Virginia will be trending milder as we get closer to the Christmas holiday.

Dry and quiet weather is expected for Thursday as an area of high pressure moves over the region. Make sure to bundle up! Morning temperatures will start in the freezing 20s. Otherwise, skies will be mostly sunny with high temperatures in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Overnight temperatures will be in the chilly lower to middle 30s.

As the area of high pressure moves to our east, we’ll notice a warming trend for the end of the week. For Christmas Eve, high temperatures will reach the 50s and lower 60s. A variable mix of sun and clouds will be overhead, but much of the region will stay dry for the daytime hours. Overnight temperatures will fall into the 40s.

A few rain showers may make their way into West Virginia and areas north of I-64 overnight Friday into early Christmas Day. Other than that, it definitely won’t feel like Christmas outside. Warmer air will move into the region, allowing high temperatures to reach the milder upper 50s and 60s. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy. Whether you got a new bike or basketball hoop for Christmas, it will be a great day to head outside and try out the new toys!

This Christmas could be one of our warmest on record. Right now, Roanoke has a forecast high of 67-degrees for Christmas Day. The last time the Star City hit 67-degrees on Christmas was back in 1955. The warmest temperature recorded during the holiday in Roanoke was 68-degrees back in 1982 and 1964.

Southwest Virginia will stay unseasonably warm into next week. High temperatures will range from the 50s and into the 60s. We could see the chance for a few showers each day, starting Monday. However, it doesn’t appear that there will be soaking rains at this time.
