Pinpoint Weather: Winter begins today under cloudy and chilly conditions

Weather Blog

The start of the winter 2021-22 season began this morning as the direct rays of the sun were over the Tropic of Capricorn, the Winter Solstice, ending the six-month journey south. Today the perpendicular Sun’s rays to the Earth begin the six-month migration north to the Tropic of Cancer and the Summer Solstice. Winter is here and the feeling is about where it should be as far as temperatures are concerned.  Highs today will be in the upper 40s as the skies remain cloudy all day.

An area of low pressure is moving along the coast and should provide some rain to the eastern half of the Commonwealth, but not much to our region. If we do see some precipitation tonight, it will be over Halifax, Charlotte and maybe Pittsylvania counties.  The amount will be light and just provide some wet roads, so if you are traveling on 501 or 58 or any other thoroughfare in the east, be alert for slick spots.

Wednesday will be breezy and cool with highs in the middle to upper 40s.  Plenty of sunshine will help with the feeling of warmth, but it will still be chilly. Dry and cold overnight into Thursday as high pressure maintains a grip on the Mid-Atlantic region.

Friday will arrive with some cloud cover and a chance for some light rain. The rain will more than likely fall after midnight, but it will be mild enough for it to remain rain and nothing frozen. The temps on Friday will be in the upper 50s to some low 60s as air arrives from the south.

Christmas Day will be cloudy to start then some clearing late in the day. Highs will be mild once again with temperature readings in the 60s. Breezy conditions return on Sunday and highs will be a bit cooler but still above normal in the middle 50s.
