Pinpoint Weather: Warming into the weekend, drought concerns continue

Weather Blog

First of all, the new Drought Monitor has been released for this week and our Moderate Drought region has been expanded. We have not been getting much rain east of the Alleghany Mountains for several weeks and the earth is parched. Rain that is in the forecast will be light at best away from the hills, so this dry trend will continue.

Next, we are looking at some very mild air for the region, in fact there may even be a few 70° temps next week in the Piedmont. Those who enjoy the winter activities like skiing or snowboarding will be relying on the snow cannons to make the snow, but you have to have temps cold enough for that process, which may be tough other than the dark of night.

The forecast is calling for some rain and clouds to be the main feature over the weekend near the area. For our viewing area, the rain will once again be surrounding the viewing area, not really falling on it. There should be some showers in the Alleghany Highlands over the weekend, and maybe a light shower in a few spots east of the Foothills. Overall, the next chance for widespread rain looks to be next Thursday, but that is way down the road and that will be changing as we get closer to the event.

The good news is that we should not have much trouble traveling this weekend in the Commonwealth.  A few showers here and there, but otherwise dry. The forecast for Christmas is for well above normal temps reaching the upper 60s, they should be in the 40s.

Enjoy the holiday and stay safe while on the roads. If you are traveling to the mountains, you may encounter some fog in a few locations, so stay alert.

Stay Safe and Merry Christmas
