Pinpoint Weather: Strong to severe storms today, hot pattern to follow

Weather Blog

After a very active afternoon, the region will be dealing with some significant heat and humidity as the week moves forward. The storms today will be robust and provide some gusty winds, heavy rain, and lightning. There may be some wind damage due to the intensity of the storms today so prepare for an aggressive afternoon and evening.  There is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in place until 8 pm tonight east of the 81 interstate.

The Storm prediction center has placed portions of the Piedmont under the Slight Risk category for severe storms and the rest of the region under a Marginal Risk. Gusty wind will be the main threat. Heavy rain is likely along with dangerous lightning.

Overnight expect to see some pockets of dense fog, especially where the rain has fallen. Look for a muggy and mild night as the temperatures will drop only into the upper 60s in most spots.

Tuesday still brings a very low chance for some spotty rain but the region will be more impacted by the heat and humidity.  Temperatures are forecast to reach the low 90s and with the humidity, we should feel more like the mid to upper 90s.

Wednesday and Thursday will be hot and humid. Dangerously hot and humid as the temps peak in the middle 90s. Heat index values will be in the upper 90s and maybe the low 100s for a brief time.  Storms arrive overnight into Friday and that should break the heat spell for a bit. Still on the hot side with low 90s, but not as bad as earlier in the week.

Saturday should be dry and normal but Sunday looks to bring along some strong storms once again.

Stay safe everyone.
