ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — We’ll start Monday on a quiet note, but strong storms have the potential to develop during the afternoon and evening hours.
For Monday morning, temperatures will mainly be in the 50s with a mix of sun and clouds overhead. Similar to Sunday, Monday’s high temperatures will be in the 70s across Southwest Virginia. These mild temperatures are ahead of the strong cold front that will impact our region during the afternoon and evening.
Scattered showers and storms will move west-to-east ahead of the passing cold front. There may be a few gaps in the line of rain, so not everyone will see wet weather. However, isolated storms may become strong to severe. The main threat with stronger storms will be damaging wind gusts. Although the threat is low, we cannot rule out an isolated tornado or hail. Southwest Virginia is under a Slight Risk for severe weather, so it’s important to stay weather-aware, especially between 1:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday. The WFXR Pinpoint Weather Team will keep an eye on the situation and provide updates.
A few showers may linger for the overnight hours, but much of the rain will be out of the region before midnight. Winds will become breezy and overnight lows will be in the lower 50s and 40s.
Tuesday will be noticeably cooler and windy! Wind speeds of 15 – 25 mph are likely with gusts up to 30 – 40 mph possible. Make sure to tether down any Halloween decorations and lightweight outdoor objects ahead of time. High temperatures will be in the 50s in the New River Valley, Alleghany Highlands, and higher portions of the Roanoke Valley. Highs in the lower to middle 60s are expected elsewhere. Cloud cover will be variable across Southwest Virginia.
Winds will gradually weaken overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. It will be a chilly start to Wednesday with morning temperatures in the 40s and upper 30s at higher elevations. There will be some sunshine during the day, but clouds will increase during the evening.
The region will see another chance for rain late Thursday into Friday. Periods of heavy rainfall are possible at times. Some showers will linger into Saturday, too. It will be cooler and cloudy during this timeframe with highs in the lower 60s and 50s.
