Storms are expected to roll into the region from the west today and there is the potential for some of them to be strong to severe. The main issue with the storms today will be the chance of gusty winds near 60 mph and hail the size of a quarter.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for locations south of Route 460 until 9 pm tonight.

Unfortunatley, there is also a slight risk, albeit a very small one, for an isolated tornado to pop up this afternoon.

Although the risk is widespread the better chance of a rogue spin-up tornado is east of the Blue Ridge Parkway after around 2 pm and before 8 pm.

Stay safe today and practice your safety plan. Gusty winds can do significant damage, as well as large hail.

Here are some tips for you and your family.

Stay safe,
John Carroll
