Pinpoint Weather: Spotty light rain along the Blue Ridge in Virginia this evening, otherwise dry and chilly heading into the weekend

Weather Blog

Full moon tonight, the Harvest Moon, will be the first of two full moons in the month of October.  The second full moon of a calendar month is referred to as a Blue Moon.  Why Blue Moon?  Not really confident with the reasons since they have no scientific basis or value but based on folklore and stories. The moon will not appear blue and the expression “once in a Blue Moon” refers to the rarity of an event since Blue Moons do not occur very often. So, it is just one of those nicknames that has endured.

As for the forecast, there is a bit of a blemish on our otherwise lovely day in Virginia. A line of light rain and drizzle is expected over the counties of Patrick, Franklin, Bedford and Amherst this evening and is expected to drift east into the overnight hours. This rain will be light and short lived, but will be problematic at times as the roads will be slick.   Other than that, the NRV, Roanoke Valley and most of Southside are going to be relatively quiet.  Southside may see some showers before midnight as well as Lynchburg with clearing skies toward dawn.

Friday will be the advent of much cooler than normal weather as highs will only be in the 60s most places east of the Foothills. The mountain and NRV locations are expecting only upper 50s to low 60s so it is time to break out the sweaters.  All this cool weather will be under clear skies. Break out the sweaters and the Autumn wardrobe from your closet and get outside and enjoy.

Saturday and Sunday will be on the cool and sunny side as well as high pressure moves into the eastern half of the country.  The skies will be clear and the air will be dry allowing overnight temps in the highlands to approach the freezing mark at some of the higher elevated locations Saturday into Sunday.  Time of the year to start making sure you have enough wood for the winter.

This weekend will be a great weekend to enjoy the fall foliage changing, it will not be even close to peak, but it will be noticeable in our western counties in the NRV and Highlands.

Stay safe and healthy
