Mostly cloudy skies are expected today as the region braces for some showers. The batch of rain that is slated for this afternoon will be on the light side with a few pockets of moderate rain mixed in from time to time.

The rain will begin before noon and move over the region from NW to SE in the lanes I have put on the map. The forecast rainfall amounts have been inconsistent, but generally, there will be about a quarter to half-inch of rain with this first round.

Yes, there will be a second round of rain on Sunday. This batch is likely to have some robust rain, some gusty winds, some lightning, and maybe some small hail.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a good batch of the region under the Marginal Risk for Severe Storms on Sunday. The main issues anticipated are going to be the gusty winds, but some small hail is possible. Also, although not under the “severe weather” definition or parameters, there may be some brief heavy rain that could lead to some minor flooding, and lightning can’t be ignored either.

There are a number of outdoor events this weekend, the Dogwood Festival in Vinton is one I will be attending. The forecast looks better on Saturday than Sunday, but you do need to bring the rain gear to any event you plan to attend this weekend.

Enjoy the weekend but stay alert for the storms on Sunday and the rain on Saturday. If you are planning on getting into the garden this weekend, Saturday may be best.

It looks like Monday will be warmer and dry, but more rain and storms are likely for the rest of the week.

Stay Safe,
