Pinpoint Weather: Rain returns Sunday; pockets of freezing rain possible in the mountains

Weather Blog

Saturday is proving to be a chilly day with a bountiful blue sky. You’ll want to bundle up today and tonight. It won’t be quite as chilly Sunday, but you’ll need the umbrella handy through much of the day.

While temperatures will not drop as low as they did last night, it will be another frigid night with temperatures still dropping to below freezing.

With this in mind, some light rain may move in from the west in time to result in pockets of freezing rain in the mountains, mainly north and west of Botetourt County, before temperatures warm to above freezing later in the morning. This could result in a light glazing of ice, mainly on elevated surfaces, in the areas under a Winter Weather Advisory as indicated in purple shading below. Motorists should be aware of icy spots that tend to develop first on bridges and overpasses.

Scattered to numerous rain showers will overspread more of the region through the rest of the day on Sunday, so keep the umbrella handy. Rain will likely be light to moderate.

Sunday’s temperatures will climb a little higher and reach highs closer to typical for this time of year. Expect highs in the mid and upper 40s for most locales.

The rain is expected to exit the region by midnight before cold air moves in behind the cold front and temperatures drop to below freezing overnight. However, a few flakes mixing with the rain as it exits the westernmost counties can’t be ruled out. In addition, upslope snow showers for the western slopes of our bordering West Virginia Counties can be expected Monday morning.

It will be mostly sunny, breezy, and colder Monday with highs in the low to mid 30s in the mountains and mid to upper 30s across the Piedmont.

Monday night lows drop into the teens for many spots.

Tuesday looks to be the coldest day of the week with highs only in the low to mid 30s for a majority of the area.

Temperatures recover to more seasonable levels mid to late week.
