ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Prepare to bundle up a bit more this Tuesday as colder air returns to the region.
A cold front that swept through Southwest Virginia Monday has allowed colder air to rush into the area. For Tuesday, winds will be lighter with a mix of sun and clouds overhead. The morning will start with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Afternoon highs will only be in the upper 30s and 40s! For comparison, Monday’s high temperatures were in the milder 60s and lower 70s. Expect the colder-than-average conditions to stick around for the next few days.
We’re still keeping an eye on a storm system to the south for overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Light wintry precipitation (snow, sleet) will try to work into Southwest Virginia, but don’t expect much. Slightly warmer air aloft may only allow us to see some light rain and dry air will also make it difficult for any precipitation to reach the ground. Overall, there is the chance for a brief period of wintry mix in Southwest Virginia. However, almost no snow or ice accumulation is expected. If there is any, there may be a coating of snow in parts of the West Virginia mountains and at higher elevations. Most of the precipitation should be out of the region by the afternoon. High temperatures will be in the upper 30s and 40s.
Thursday is looking drier with variably cloudy skies overhead. Morning temperatures will be in the cold 20s while afternoon highs will mainly be in the 40s. We’ll notice a brief warming trend as we head into the latter part of the week.
The end of the week and into the weekend looks a bit unsettled. A warm front will lift through Southwest Virginia Friday. This front could spark a few light rain showers. It will also be milder with highs in the 50s. With the warm front to our north, we can expect even warmer conditions for the start of the weekend. For Saturday, highs will be in the 60s and lower 70s.
Another cold front will bring the chance for rain late Saturday into Sunday morning. Winds will pick up along this front and allow cooler air to enter the region. High temperatures for Sunday and Monday will be in the upper 40s and 50s.
