ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — While we had plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures for the first half of the week, an approaching cold front will bring some changes to Southwest Virginia.
One thing we will notice Thursday is extra cloudiness. Some sunshine will peek out from time to time, but skies will generally be mostly to partly cloudy for the day. Morning temperatures will start in the 40s while afternoon highs will be in the 60s. Some locations in our Piedmont could get close to the 70-degree mark. Overall, the weather will stay relatively dry for most of Veterans Day. Rain chances will increase as we get closer to sunset and winds will pick up at times.
A few late afternoon rain showers are possible, but the bulk of the wet weather will move through Thursday evening into early Friday morning. Periods of heavy rainfall are possible at times, but we’re not anticipating any severe weather. Around a half an inch to one inch of rainfall is likely along the Blue Ridge with lesser amounts elsewhere.
Most of the rain will be off to the east around sunrise Friday morning. Skies will gradual clear during the morning and winds will be breezy at times. Temperatures will be cooler, but a bit more seasonal. Expect highs to be in the upper 50s and 60s. Overnight temperatures will fall into the cold 30s and lower 40s.
The cooler air will settle in for the weekend. There is the chance for a few mountain snow showers along west-facing slopes. However, there won’t be too much moisture to work with. Otherwise, much of Southwest Virginia will see variably cloudy skies overhead with breezy winds blowing through. High temperatures will be in the chilly upper 40s and into the middle 50s Saturday. Freezing conditions return to the forecast for Sunday morning as temperatures start in the 20s and lower 30s. Highs will be in the middle 40s and into the lower 50s Sunday afternoon.
The chilly weather pattern is expected to continue into the beginning of next week. While a few snow showers may make their way into areas west of the Blue Ridge Parkway Monday morning, don’t expect much. It will still be breezy at times and a mix of sun and clouds will be overhead. High temperatures will only reach the 40s and lower 50s.
High pressure will build into Southwest Virginia Tuesday, giving the region more sunshine and a slight warm-up. High temperatures will mainly be in the chilly 50s for Tuesday. However, some locations may reach the lower to middle 60s by Wednesday. Morning temperatures will still be on the cold side, though. Expect temperatures in the 20s and lower 30s for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
