Pinpoint Weather: Dry pattern yields to rain on Saturday, warming up next week

Weather Blog

After a bitter cold start that saw a couple of records broken today (Danville and Lynchburg) the region warmed nicely in the afternoon. The temps did not get very close to the normal highs of the upper 60s and low 70s, but without the wind today it was a much warmer “feel” to the Commonwealth.  The chilly pattern is not yet finished with us, but the cold pattern is done for now.

Tonight we will see a mixture of clouds and clear skies yielding to mostly cloudy skies near dawn.  The next big weather maker is on the horizon and will be overhead Saturday.

There will be a thickening of the clouds early Saturday as rain is likely to arrive early in the afternoon.  It will start out in the NRV around late morning and overtake the region in the afternoon. I am expecting to see a good old fashioned soaking rain that will be beneficial for the plants and grass.  Amounts should be in the 0.75 to 1” range, but may come down quickly so minor flooding is a concern.  The region also needs to get some “wetting” rain to reduce the fire concerns.  So far this month in Roanoke we are about an inch behind as far as precipitation goes, so we could use a nice soaking rain.  The region will still be chilly as the cold air has yet to be completely scoured out. Highs Saturday will be in the 50s.

Sunday the rain will be present in the pre-dawn hours but should exit very early in the day. The exiting area of low pressure will leave behind some breezy to windy weather. Drying and warming up will be the features that define the day Sunday.

Monday looks to be a bit milder as the mercury in the thermometer will get into the middle 70s.  Tuesday will be even warmer with low 80s making a return.  The summer feel will continue into Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the low to middle 80s as well. Rain may not return until at least Thursday.
