ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Keep the umbrella handy this week! Showers and storms are possible each day in Southwest and Central Virginia.

A bit of sunshine will peek out Tuesday with morning temperatures in the 50s and lower 60s. It will be a dry start to the day with high temperatures in the lower and middle 80s. A nearby front will spark afternoon showers and storms in Southwest and Central Virginia. It will be muggy outside, allowing some showers and storms to produce downpours.

The rain will be hit-or-miss, but a few isolated storms may become strong to severe during the heat of the day. The Storm Prediction Center has placed areas east of I-81 under a Marginal Risk for severe weather. This means a couple of isolated storms may produce gusty winds and/or hail. Frequent lightning is also possible. Most of the rainy activity will occur during the afternoon and into the evening.

Similar to Tuesday, Wednesday will be warm and muggy. Afternoon highs will be in the lower and middle 70s in the Alleghany Highlands and New River Valley. Elsewhere, highs will be in the lower and middle 80s. There is the chance for spotty afternoon showers and storms, but rain chances will be slightly lower than Tuesday.

Thursday will be a bit drier with variably cloudy skies overhead. It won’t be as warm outside as slightly cooler air make its way into the region. Highs will mainly be in the 70s, which is seasonably warm for the beginning of May. Rain showers will have the chance to move through overnight Thursday into Friday.

Periods of rain and cooler temperatures are in the forecast for Friday and Saturday. A few storms may come into the mix, too. High temperatures will be in the 60s and lower 70s Friday. However, a wedge will begin to develop for the weekend. Off-and-on rain is expected for Saturday with highs in the cooler-than-average 60s.

Some rain showers may linger into Mother’s Day. The amount of rainfall we see will be determined by the location of a low pressure system. For now, keeping slight rain chances in the forecast for Sunday. It will still be cool with high temperatures in the 60s.
