Pinpoint Weather: Colder air rushes in and sticks around through the weekend

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — After a few days of mild and quiet weather, we’ll be dealing with a colder weather pattern for the next several days.

Many locations in Southwest Virginia will wake up to temperatures in the upper 20s and 30s for Friday. However, the blustery winds will result in wind chill values in the teens and 20s, so grab a jacket or coat as you head out the door to block the chilly winds.

An area of high pressure will build into the Mid-Atlantic Friday and remain in place for most of the weekend. Despite mostly sunny skies overhead, it will be breezy throughout the day with high temperatures in the 40s and lower 50s. If you’re heading to any high school football games Friday night, layer up and stay warm! Winds will gradually calm down during the overnight hours.

It will be a quiet and frosty Saturday morning with temperatures starting in the freezing 20s. Skies will be mostly to partly sunny during the day with highs in the 40s and 50s. Overnight lows will fall into the cold 20s and lower 30s.

Skies will become mostly cloudy Sunday and the chilly weather pattern will remain in place. High temperatures will be in the middle 40s and into the middle 50s. A few stray showers are possible during the day, but rain chances will increase Sunday evening into Monday morning as another cold front sweeps through the area. Some mountain snow showers and rain/snow mix are possible at higher elevations. However, like Thursday’s cold front, limited moisture is expected to be associated with this cold front.

The second cold front will reinforce colder air into Southwest Virginia for the beginning of next week. Brisk winds are anticipated for Monday with a variable mix of clouds and sunshine overhead. High temperatures will be in the 40s and lower 50s. The coldest air settles in on Tuesday. The blustery winds will stick around with highs in the cold 30s and 40s for Tuesday. Some west-slope snow showers are possible, but much of Southwest Virginia will stay relatively dry for the start of the week.

For Wednesday and Thursday (Thanksgiving Day), we’re expecting dry weather with a mix of sun and clouds. Winds won’t be as breezy and temperatures will be a few degrees warmer. High temperatures will be in the upper 40s – middle 50s for Wednesday with more spots warming up into the 50s on Thanksgiving Day.
