ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The first few days of December will be on the mild side. However, we could see another cooldown in Southwest Virginia by next week.

Lighter winds are anticipated for Wednesday, but we won’t see as much sunshine during the day. A frontal boundary will throw some clouds toward Southwest Virginia during the morning hours. A few light rain showers are possible, but many locations won’t see any rain at all. Similar to Tuesday, high temperatures will be in the 50s with a few spots warming up into the lower 60s east of the Blue Ridge. Clouds will gradually decrease overnight. Low temperatures will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

Our warmest temperatures for the week are slated for Thursday and Friday. Blustery west winds will help temperatures warm up into the 60s Thursday afternoon. Portions of Central Virginia and Southside may even reach the lower 70s. Although dry conditions are in the forecast for Thursday, winds will be an issue. A High Wind Watch and Fire Weather Watch will go into effect for Highland County Thursday. Winds 20 – 30 mph are expected with gusts as high as 60 mph possible. The gusty winds may bring down tree limbs, cause power outages, and make travel difficult for those operating high-profile vehicles.

The dry and breezy conditions are also favorable for increased fire danger across Southwest Virginia. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged for the remainder of the week as fires may spread quickly in these weather conditions. If you are burning outdoors, please be attentive and burn with caution.

More sunshine is slated for Friday with lighter winds blowing through the region. High temperatures will reach the 60s and lower 70s.

Temperatures will trend cooler for the weekend. By Saturday, highs will be in the lower 60s and 50s with a mix of sun and clouds overhead. Overnight lows will be in the 30s.

It will be a bit more seasonable for Sunday with highs in the lower 50s and 40s. Clouds will gradually increase during the day as another cold front approaches the region. Some rain showers are possible Sunday night into Monday. However, rain chances appear to be limited.

While high temperatures will be in the seasonable lower 50s and 40s for Monday, Tuesday will be even cooler with highs in the 40s.
