Pinpoint Weather: Closing out Autumn 2021 dry and chilly, clouds arrive Tuesday

Weather Blog

The Astronomical Winter begins on Tuesday morning, tomorrow, at 10:59 am as the direct rays of the sun are over the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere, marking the start of the winter season. The Meteorological Winter began on December 1st but you may not have noticed since the temps have been very mild thus far in the 12th month. Look for more of a seasonable forecast this week as we head toward Christmas.

Tuesday will be a day with a mix of high clouds to mostly cloudy skies. The dome of high pressure keeping the area dry and mild will yield to a system moving in from the south and up the coast. The result will be a mixture of clouds and some sun, with more clouds than sun Tuesday. There may be a few light rain showers over the SE corner of the Piedmont, but for the most part the region will stay dry.

Wednesday will see clear skies and a brisk wind from the north as the low exits the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. Cool and dry weather is likely Wednesday and Thursday as high pressure re-establishes dominance over the area. Some west facing slopes may see some snow Thursday night, but the rest of the region will stay dry. Friday looks to be a day with increasing cloudiness followed by some light rain overnight into Christmas Day. Mild air will allow the precipitation to be all rain and the Commonwealth will have little chance of a White Christmas.

The rest of the holiday weekend will be dry and milder than normal by a few degrees.
