ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — It will feel more like winter outside to start the new week.
A strong cold front will pass through Southwest Virginia Monday morning. While a few light rain showers and upslope snow showers are possible along this front, much of the light precipitation will push out of the area before sunrise. Winds will be our main issue for the start of the week. Wind speeds of 15-20 mph are possible while gusts as high as 35 mph may occur along the Blue Ridge. Skies will generally be mostly to partly cloudy for the day. Expect high temperatures in the 40s in the New River Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Parts of the Roanoke Valley, Central Virginia, and Southside will reach the 50s.
An area of high pressure will be in control for the middle of the week. Although Tuesday will be dry, it will be even colder. Morning temperatures will be in the frigid 20s and winds will still be a bit breezy at times. Despite the plentiful sunshine slated for the day, high temperatures will only be in the 30s in the mountains and 40s elsewhere.
Due to clear skies and calmer winds Tuesday night, many in Southwest Virginia will wake up to freezing temperatures in the teens and 20s Wednesday morning. It will likely be a frost morning for many people. Otherwise, more sunshine is in the forecast with highs in the slightly milder upper 40s and lower 50s.
Some patchy frost is possible Thanksgiving morning as morning temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s. If you’re taking part in this year’s Drumstick Dash, you may want to wear a sweatshirt or anything else that could keep you warm during the run. It won’t stay chilly the whole day, though. By the afternoon, temperatures will be in the milder 50s and 60s with a mix of sun and clouds overhead.
Another cold front will sweep through Southwest Virginia late Thursday night into Friday morning. A few spotty rain showers and mountain snow showers are possible early Friday morning. It will be blustery at times throughout the day and high temperatures will be in the colder 40s again.
The weekend ahead looks dry and chilly. Morning temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s each day. Temperatures will be slightly below-average with highs in the 40s and lower 50s.
