The quick shot of snow mixed with a bit of rain this morning was, as expected, a one and done. Expect to see a mixture of clouds and sunshine today and partial clearing overnight. There will be a period of much drier air that will overtake the region and linger into the weekend.
Friday will be mostly sunny and breezy with the winds arriving from the west. The west winds will allow the area to warm above normal with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Normal for late January is around 45. The west winds will be noticeable but not overpowering, so keep an eye on the trash bins, but you may not need to strap them down.
Saturday will start out very chilly as the region will be mostly cloud free overnight Friday into Saturday. The clear sky allows any of the heat that was gained during the day to radiate away, allowing the temps to fall quickly. Other than the sunshine and cooler temperatures Saturday the winds will once again be noticeable. Dropping them in the “breezy” category will be a good way to define the winds. Overall a pleasant and dry January weekend is at hand with highs in the upper 30s in the high country and the middle 40s over the piedmont.
Sunday looks to be another day with a very cold start. The temps will be in the teens and low 20s around sunrise, so if you are heading out early, bundle up. There will once again be a good deal of sunshine and the temperatures will warm quickly into the mid to upper 40s. Clouds will arrive late in the day ahead of what will be a wet Monday, so enjoy the dry pattern over the weekend.
Monday will be the next chance for widespread rain. Our neighbors to the north may see a bit of a wintry mix as we deal with the rain. Some computer models are hinting at the possibility that areas north of 460 may see some freezing rain along with the rain. A weak wedge of cold air is in the forecast so there seems to be at least the opportunity for us to get some icy precipitation. Currently the forecast is looking like mostly rain, but the line for freezing rain is too close to ignore for Monday. Stay tuned.
