Pinpoint Weather: A potpourri of weather with dry conditions north; storms likely south on Sunday

Weather Blog

On Sunday, it just depends on where you’re at that will determine whether or not you see storms during the afternoon.

If you’re in the Highlands, the likelihood is, is that you’ll remain dry; however, if you’re in Southside, expect to get wet.

During the day, a cold front will dip to the south which will allow drier air to filter into the Highlands. Those folks can expect a gradual dip in the humidity as the day progresses. That cold front likely won’t clear the area as it’s expected to stall out around the Virginia/North Carolina border. This will act as a focal point for the development of showers and thunderstorms through the day and into the evening, so locations in Southside and parts of the NRV and Central Virginia (especially those south of Route 460) can expect some storminess.

Highs on Sunday will vary from the 70s and 80s in the mountains and 80s to near 90 further east.

Into Monday, that stalled-out cold front will linger – so will the chances for more showers and storms. That front could drift a bit further north, so there could be a few showers and storms possible a tad bit further north along the Route 460 corridor and points south again on Monday. Highs are expected to be a few degrees cooler on Monday, versus Sunday.

On Tuesday … you guessed it, another chance for a few showers and storms as the stalled-out front will continue to linger over the area. In large, Tuesday’s weather will be very comparable to Monday’s.

From Wednesday through the rest of the week, we can expect drier conditions over the area, though there could be a few showers and storms possible as we head into Friday. Temperatures will also ramp back up toward the 90-degree mark along and east of the Blue Ridge – 80s elsewhere.

In short, enjoy the day in the Highlands! Further south, be sure the umbrella is handy and keep an eye to the sky for showers and storms. I don’t think the severe threat is quite as high as Saturday was, but there could be some stronger storms possible in the southern part of the region on Sunday. Locally heavy rain will be the main threat but there could be some gusty winds in some storms as well.
