Gusty winds into New Year’s Eve with rain slated for Thursday night

Winds will still be a noticeable factor moving forward into the New Year’s celebrations. Gusts will be in the 30 mph range from time to time and will be a bit of an issue at Midnight, but not overwhelming. The temperatures will be on the cool to chilly side near the end of the decade dipping into the upper 30s by then after a mild day in the 50s.

New Year’s Day will be pleasant and similar to Tuesday with highs in the low 50s again. Rain is not on the docket until late Thursday but we may see a few flakes on the west facing slopes of the Alleghany Highlands Wednesday from time to time as the NW flow takes over.

So, Thursday will be a day where the clouds move in as the day moves along and the rain may arrive some time after sunset. Rain is much more likely on Friday and should be in the form of rain or liquid precipitation. The rain will be present for most of the day Friday, and should be off and on as the pattern suggests. The new wrinkle to the forecast is going to be the staying power of the rain. I do expect the rain to linger into Saturday and be heavy at times before the sun comes up Saturday morning then taper off as the day wears on. Flooding may not be an issue to discuss yet as the amount of rain is not etched in stone yet, but I do think there will be pockets of heavy rain suggesting some minor flooding Saturday morning.

Dry and seasonable pattern will return Sunday, with highs in the mid to upper 40s under mostly sunny skies until at least the middle of the week (the first full week of the new decade).

Please stay safe this New Year’s Eve and enjoy the New Year.
