Dangerous heat and humidity expected this weekend
Over the weekend we will be looking at the potential for near 100° heat east of the Blue Ridge… and that is the actual temperature not the feels like temps. Heat Advisories have been issues for the eastern portion of our viewing area, meaning the heat and humidity will be in the 105 – 108° range from noon until 8 pm Friday. An Excessive Heat Warning goes into effect Saturday and lasts until Sunday for Halifax, Charlotte and Appomattox counties where feels like temps may reach 110 – 112°.
An Excessive Heat warning means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures are expected. The combination of heat and humidity will combine for a dangerous situation and heat related illnesses are possible. Please stay hydrated.
The areas not included in the advisory or watch will still be dangerously hot.
FYI, the last time we recorded a high temperature over 100 in Roanoke was on July 8th 2012. In Lynchburg it was 101 on that same day. This was the period following the derecho, and thousands were without power causing major problems since air conditioning or even fans were not available.
As for the heat…This is rare territory for the region, so make sure to stay safe and prepared for the dangers that the heat and humidity can bring.
Stay hydrated this weekend, stay in the shade if you have to go outside and check on the sick, elderly and those without cooling systems.
Look Before you Lock… that is the saying adopted by the National Weather Service with respect to making sure you never leave kids or pets in your vehicle when it is hot. 80° can get to 115° in 30 minutes. 90° will get to 125° in that time. This weekend will be one of the hottest periods we have seen in several years. Our heat alone, not factoring in the humidity, will be in the mid to upper 90s most locations east of the foothills. We need to be diligent this weekend with respect to staying cool and safe.
