HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a strange object found in the Fieldale community Tuesday night.

When deputies arrived it turned out the strange object was actually a weather balloon that had been released from Blacksburg earlier on that day.

Weather balloons are made of latex or synthetic rubber and filled with hydrogen or helium. These balloons carry a radiosonde that helps measure pressure, temperature, and relative humidity, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency also mentions these balloons can spend up to 2 hours in flight and drift as far as 125 miles. WFXR News looked at the distance from Blacksburg to Henry County and discovered the balloon lasted roughly over an hour and a half.
