The quiet and calm weather scenario of today will be quickly replaced by a taste of winter Wednesday. There is a good deal of cold air poised and ready to arrive by the middle of the day Wednesday along with a few showers and even a wintry mix in the mountains.

A strong cold front is likely to cross the Commonwealth early in the day and provide a bit of rain, but more impactful will be the wind and a brief return to winter. The mercury in the thermometer will drop as the day moves along and should be in the upper 40s by the evening commute. This is referred to as an upside-down temperature day with the highs occurring well before the usual time in the afternoon. Winds ahead of the front will be from the south and a bit from the southwest then sharply shift to the west and northwest by the middle of the day. The rain and wintry mix are not going to be all that robust, but that is not the main feature of the day.
