GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed an EF-1 tornado ripped through Grayson County during Tuesday’s storms.

The NWS Blacksburg survey team looked at the damage left behind after thunderstorms passed across the Baywood community on Tuesday, July 5.

They found the tornado touched down near the intersection of Cross Roads Drive and Old Baywood Drive. The team discovered a mature hardwood tree was snapped mid-trunk along with a swirling pattern in a nearby grass field.

NWS also noted that the tornado headed southeast where reports of snapped or uprooted trees were found along Greenwich and Delhart roads.

The survey team says the tornado was contained within a larger area of straight-line winds. It had reported maximum winds of 95 mph. and was on the ground for 2.2 miles.
