Dangerous heat over the weekend

The heat is on as we head into the weekend

The remnants of Barry have pushed off the coast so the threat of widespread storms is dwindling.  There is still an opportunity for us to get some isolated storms in the heat of the afternoon, so don’t let your guard down with respect to the thunder, but it is the hot weather that is now the major concern.

Highs will be in the 90s once again this afternoon with the heat index measuring in the upper 90s to low 100s in the Piedmont.  This is a continuation of the hot pattern we have been dealing with the whole month of July, but now it is getting ratcheted up a bit this weekend.

Temperature readings will be rising into the mid to upper 90s on Friday and Saturday so be prepared for some 100 – 105 heat index numbers.  This is the hottest we have been for quite some time and although not unprecedented, it does not happen often.  So, what to do?

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, wear loose fitting clothes and light colored clothes.  A wide brimmed hat will help you keep the direct sun off your neck and head.  Stay in the shade as often as possible.

Never leave kids or pets in your vehicle at any time.

This heat wave will continue into the beginning of next week, so remember to check on your neighbors and keep your pets in mind when it comes to this heat as well.
