W&L Football shuts out Bridgewater, 17-0

Sports

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee football team limited Bridgewater to just 118 yards of total offense in shutting out the Eagles by a score of 17-0 on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (6-1, 4-0) now have two shutouts on the season, the first year with multiple shutouts since posting three scoreless outings during the 2004 campaign.

Neither team could sustain much of an offensive drive throughout the first quarter, but W&L had driven to the BC 22-yardline on its first series of the second period. However, sophomore quarterback Stephen Murrin (Fort Worth, Texas / Fort Worth Country Day) had the ball stripped on a third-down run, thus ending the threat.

The Generals forced a punt on the following possession and came up with a special teams play to change the momentum and set up a short field. Senior linebacker Adam Harter (Houston, Texas / Kincaid) got a hand on the punt, which was fielded on the Bridgewater (3-5, 0-4) 31-yardline by junior defensive end Robert Harvey (Lenk im Simmental, Switzerland / Gymnasium Thun). Senior running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) cashed in just four plays later with an 11-yard touchdown jaunt that gave W&L a 7-0 lead with 7:53 left in the half.

The Blue & White threatened again on their next offensive possession, but Murrin was picked off on the BC 7-yardline with just 1:19 left.

W&L received the kickoff to start the second half and proceeded to string together a 13-play, 72-yard drive that ate 7:40 from the game clock. Breece once again finished things off, this time with a 1-yard touchdown run that made it 14-0 with 7:13 left in the third quarter.

Senior cornerback Owen Roberts (Athens, Ga. / Athens Academy) picked off BC junior quarterback Malcolm Anderson on at the BC 31-yardline the second play of the next possession, eventually leading to a 19-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Arturo Ramirez (Providence Village, Texas / Braswell). The kick gave W&L a 17-0 lead with 2:46 left in the penultimate quarter.

Bridgewater never threatened to advance into W&L territory for the entire second half, with the Generals holding the ball for 24:50 of the 30 second half minutes. For the game, the Blue & White held a 41:35-18:25 advantage in time of possession.

On offense, W&L totaled 312 yards, including 298 yards on the ground. Breece led the way with 117 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. It was the 19th 100-yard game of his career setting a new program record. Senior running back Coby Kirkland (Duncan, Okla. / Duncan) notched 56 yards on 12 carries, while Murrin posted 54 yards on 15 carries. He also completed 2-of-8 passes for 14 yards but was intercepted twice. On defense, senior safety Dean Johnson (Atlanta, Ga. / Marist) tallied a team-high five tackles, while Harvey had four tackles and a sack.

Junior running back Ronald Robinson, Jr., paced the Bridgewater offense with 35 yards on nine carries. Senior quarterback Matt Lawton completed 9-of-20 passes for 68 yards and junior wide-out Viante Tucker snared five passes for 43 yards. Senior linebacker Brett Tharp registered an amazing 23 tackles and one forced fumble.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest.
