VT Bounces Back With Upset Win Over No. 22 Duke

Virginia Tech bounced back from its shocking loss to Old Dominion by upsetting No. 22 Duke on the road, 31-14. The Hokies improved to 3-1, 2-0 ACC this season and now enters next week’s highly-anticipated match-up with Notre Dame with momentum.

Redshirt junior quarterback Ryan Willis passed for 332 yards and three touchdowns, completing 17 of 27 attempts. Saturday marked Willis’ first collegiate start since Nov. 11, 2016 at Baylor when he played for the Kansas Jayhawks.

“He certainly wasn’t perfect but I thought he played pretty well. Just off the cuff without grading him or evaluating him, I felt comfortable with him in there. We’ve been watching him practice going on two years now so we see him every day,” head coach Justin Fuente said.

“We know he has some talent. He’s a competitor. He has some toughness. He likes the game. He was really having fun out there. It wasn’t too big for him.”
