The Virginia Tech football team is taking notice of Old Dominion University’s X factor for Saturday’s matchup. Funny thing about that X factor, for one he’s a 17 year old true freshman. ODU quarterback Steven Williams turned heads last Saturday when his number was called in the second half against the University of North Carolina. The Monarchs offense was stalling but once Williams came in ODU outscored UNC in the fourth quarter. ODU went on to lose that game 53 to 23 but a potential star could have been born on that field.
“Just watching him play in the North Carolina game first of all he’s pretty convicted on where he’s going to with the football,” Hokie head football coach Justin Fuente said. “Almost instantaneously their offensive changed when he got in. They’re not afraid to cut it lose and let it go.”
It’ll be a tough task to beat this Hokie defense for Williams. It’ll be his first start for one. The game is sold out for two and Tech is ranked #13–a well deserved ranking.
“You see a guy that’s very athletic and reminds me of AJ Bush in a lot of ways in terms of his height and explosiveness,” Hokie defensive coordinator Bud Foster said. “He’s got a live arm but he just doesn’t have a lot of experience.”
He’ll get that experience on Saturday. Fun fact about this upcoming game, Hokie nation has showed up. The game is sold out. It’s impressive considering they’ve never played this team and it’s a nonconference matchup.
