LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — With less than three weeks to go until the start of college football season, there’s no doubt who the starting quarterback will be at Liberty.
Stephen “Buckshot” Calvert is getting ready for his senior season after throwing for over three thousand yards for the second year in a row.
“Buck is a naturally talented quarterback,” quarterbacks coach Kent Austin said. “He’s got a great arm. He has natural accuracy. “
Calvert is Liberty’s all-time career leader in passing touchdowns with 65 but he enters 2019 looking to play smarter football.
“Sometimes, he relies on his arm talent too much. So we’re focusing in on poor decisions. And I think he’s come a long way,” Austin said. “We want to eliminate Buck’s disaster plays.”
The Flames’ coaching staff is using fall camp to try and eliminate some of Calvert’s mistakes and turnovers ahead of the season opener on August 31 against Syracuse. He threw 18 interceptions last season against his 21 passing touchdowns.
Austin also knows that Calvert is more of a quiet leader, who makes most of the noise at Liberty with his arm.
“On a quiet quarterback we try to focus on leadership by example and leadership through preparation,” Austin said. “We told the quarterbacks that first and foremost they have to be trustworthy to their teammates. Their teammates know, when they take the field, they’re ultra prepared.”
