Roanoke College’s Carla Flaherty coaching during pregnancy and COVID-19 pandemic

Salem, VA(WFXR)-The Roanoke College women’s basketball program is set to grow but for a good reason. In couple of months, head coach Carla Flaherty is set to give birth to a baby girl. This coming season, Flaherty will be coaching her seventh for the Maroons. With a baby of the way and coaching her team…the COVID-19 pandemic has made things interesting for coach Flaherty. “I won’t lie, to be honest, it has kinda been personally a strange blessing. Because I have been able to be home to enjoy this pregnancy with AUU tournaments being cancelled. Selfishly, I haven’t been on the road so in my personal life it has really been wonderful to spend time with my husband and my family to just enjoy the process. Now when you put on the other hat, the basketball coach side it has been an interesting combination. Just trying to check in on different methods with perspective student athletes to keep them engaged to make sure Roanoke College to be on the forefront of their thinking. We did a lot of work last summer really because our program has taken some steps. We were really able to focus on younger classes when it came to recruiting. So we do have a wonderful list and a composite of perspective student athletes. So we are trying to focus on those student athletes for the upcoming seasons,” said Flaherty. We wish Flaherty and her husband Neil all the best with their bundle of joy.
