It had been 18 years since a Franklin County Eagle had heard his name called in the Major League Baseball draft, until last Tuesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected James Madison University right-handed pitcher, Nick Robertson.
“I couldn’t stop smiling, the guy on the phone told me just try not to smile too much, but I couldn’t help it, it’s everything I ever wanted, so I was just really happy,” Nick said.
Just as Nick and his family were watching and anxiously waiting, so was his high school coach Barry Shelton.
“I was following it on the draft tracker for a couple days and when I finally saw it, I started getting phone calls you know so that was cool moment,” Shelton said. ”I just sent him a text later in the day you know, it’s a busy time he’s going to be pulled in a lot of different directions and you don’t want to do anything to take away from the moment, just congrats keep working proud of you, that’s about it.”
“It’s just a proud moment to see any of these guys go one but a kid as special as Nick it’s a big moment,”Shelton said.
Shelton said he wasn’t shocked. He had expected to see Nick’s name off the board earlier.
“Him and I have talked about this since probably his sophomore year like trying to set that bar, you know you’re going to get drafted, you’re going to pitch in the big leagues one day, this is what you need to do and this is how you go about your business, that dream can be a reality,” Shelton said. “Just having those flashbacks of coaching him in 9th, 10th grade and now seeing his dream come true it was a pretty special moment.”
It’s a dream Nick has been chasing for as long as he can remember.
“My parents tell me the first word I said was ball, so I guess from then on they kinda knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Nick said.
As he begins his journey, he has hundreds cheering him on.
”It’s awesome just having a big support staff like that, the whole community is involved and having people reach out to me and say well we don’t know anything about the Dodgers, but we will now because we will be following you,” Nick said.
