ASHLAND, Va.- The Randolph women’s basketball team faced defending ODAC champion Randolph-Macon on the road on Tuesday night. The host Yellow Jackets jumped on the WildCats in the first quarter and didn’t look back as R-MC won 59-44.
Randolph struggled in the first quarter as it committed nine turnovers. The Yellow Jackets went ahead 13-2 in the frame.
The Wildcats recovered in the second quarter as it scored 18 points. Randolph went on a 15-5 run that spanned the majority of the period. Lanaysia Gonzalez (Richmond, Va./Goochland) helped key the Cats’ spurt with eight points. The WildCats cut their deficit to nine points at 3:45 and trailed by 11 points, 31-20, at halftime.
A Natalie Clark (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) layup to begin the third quarter closed the Randolph deficit to nine points 31-22 at 9:29. Randolph-Macon would push its lead back into double-digits in the period and led 45-30.
Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) scored all 14 points for the WildCats in the fourth and final quarter. She would finish with 21 points on the night to lead Randolph to go with four rebounds and four steals.
Randolph was 16-of-53 (30.2%) to Randolph-Macon’s 21-of-65 (32.3%) performance from the floor. The WildCats did have a better showing from behind the three-point line as they were 7-of-16 (43.8%) on the evening to the Yellow Jackets 6-of-20 performance.
Gonzalez finished with eight points on the night to go with seven rebounds and two steals. Cameron O’Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds. Clark had six points.
Randolph will travel to Emory and Henry on Saturday. Game time will be at 2:00 pm.
