Seven Jefferson Forest student-athletes sign NLI

FOREST, Va. (WFXR) — Jefferson Forest High School today celebrated seven of its student-athletes who are signing NCAA Division I or II National Letters of Intent.*It should be noted that all of our Spring sport athletes lost their Junior season with the COVID closure of Virginia schools.

Hanna Cooper (Girls Soccer)* signing with Division II Concord University in Athens, West Virginia.  The Mountain Lions are coached by Luke Duffy and play in the Mountain East Conference.  Hannah plays Goalkeeper for the Lady Cavs and plans on studying Biology while at Concord.  Hanna’s parents are Linda and John Cooper and sister Emma.

Emma Lemley (Softball)* has committed to Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference, playing for Hokies Coach Pete D’Amour.  Emma committed to Tech in the 8th grade.  She has been a 4 year starter for JF and has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the state for most of that time.  Emma has a lifetime batting average of .405, along with an impressive 0.89 ERA.  She was 2019 Seminole District Player of the Year as a Sophomore, and a two time selection to the All-District, All-Region, All-Area News Advance and All-Timesland Teams.  Emma will major in Civil Engineering at Va Tech.  Emma’s parents are Ginny and Bryan Lemley and sister Katherine Keaton.

Connor Maggi (Baseball)* will play for the Division I Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, who compete in the Big South Conference under Head Coach Jim Chester.  Connor is a Right-handed Pitcher for the Cavaliers, earning a spot on the 2nd Team All-District Team his Sophomore year.  Connor will major in Physical Therapy while at Gardner-Webb.  His parents are Cathy and Rob Maggi, and sister Carter, a former standout Volleyball player at Jefferson Forest.

Taylor Mason (Girls Soccer)* is signing with Liberty University to play for Flames’s Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer in the Atlantic Sun Conference.  She has scored 9 goals and chipped in with 7 assists over her three years as a starter for the Lady Cavaliers, during which time JF were champions of the Seminole District and Region 4D.  The speedy Midfielder was chosen to the 2nd Team All-District and All-Region 4Dteams, as well as All-Area News Advance 2nd Team as a Sophomore.  Taylor plans on studying Exercise Science with a concentration in Therapeutic Science while at Liberty.  Her parents are Karen and Kell Mason, and brother Colin.

Cassell Richardson (Girls Lacrosse)* will play for Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina.  The Wolves are coached by Hannah Rotello and play in the South Atlantic Conference in NCAA Division II.  Cassell was a 1st Team selection as a Freshman and Sophomore to the All-District and All-Region Teams.  She will major in Business Administration at Newberry.  Her parents are Kelly and Frank Cassell

Carter Shipp (Wrestling) is signing with Division II Lander University located in Greenwood, South Carolina, where the Bearcats compete in the Peach Belt Conference.  Carter was the VHSL 4A State Champion at 195 last year as a Junior, leading JF to a 5th place finish in the state.  He is also a NHSCA All-American.  Carter plans on studying Nursing at Lander.  His parents are Robert and Penny Shipp, and brother Corey, who also was an excellent JF Wrestler.

Spencer Williams (Baseball)* will commit to Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.   Spencer pitches for the Cavaliers and is a Team Captain.  He battled back from elbow surgery his Freshman year to become one of the top pitchers in the area.  Last year he pitched a complete game shutout, including 12 strikeouts, at the PBR National Championship in Georgia.  Spencer plans on studying Exercise Science while at Gardner-Webb.  His parents are Jennifer and Troy Williams and brother Conner.
