ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — It was billed as one of the most anticipated commitment announcements of the year. And in an era where the nature of this type of news is usually released on social media, Salem linebacker Chris Cole made his decision in a relatively old-school fashion: by picking a hat.

By reaching over and selecting the red cap with the iconic “G” logo on the front, Cole picked the University of Georgia as the home for his collegiate career. It was a moment that unfolded Sunday at 202 Social House in downtown Roanoke, surrounded by family, friends, coaches and teammates.

Cole, the highest rated recruit out of the Commonwealth, chose the Bulldogs over five other schools, including Virginia Tech. He said he didn’t make his final decision until the day of his announcement, when he returned from a recruiting visit at Tennessee.

“I’d say it’s like the greatest moment of my life. I’ve always dreamed of this and now to have it happen, I’m super blessed and just thankful for this,” Cole said. “I always felt it in my heart to go there, just the players and the coaches, I really fit in with them really. I just feel like if I went there, I’d be the best developed and get a great education.”
