SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — There’ll be a different kind of “pop-up” on the baseball field on Thursday night, where you’ll find a meal instead of a batter at home plate.

The Salem Red Sox are now taking reservations for a one-of-a-kind dining experience at Hayley Toyota Field.

“When they come in, there’s going to be a hostess sitting at the front, and they’re actually going to get walked down to the field by the hostess to their table,” special events director Kayla Keegan said. “And then there’s going to be servers to bring out menus. Just giving them this whole restaurant experience, but just a little bit different outside at the ballpark.”

The infield and concourse will be transformed into a restaurant, with diners getting the chance to sit at tables located on the diamond and enjoy a mix of ballpark favorites and chef-inspired meals.

“There has been a lot of thought put into it and it’s going to be a little bit different than our normal ballpark fare but still a lot of similar items,” general manager Allen Lawrence said.

Alongside popular items such as hot dogs and half-pound bacon cheeseburgers are more unique selections including chicken kebobs and quesadillas.

“I know a lot of our fans are kinda missing baseball so we just hope that with them dining on the infield and dining on the diamond, that just gives them that little bit of ballpark feel that everyone is missing in baseball right now,” Keegan said.

Diners can choose to eat at either 6 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. on the infield or concourse. As of Tuesday night, the Sox have completely booked its 7:30 time slot on the diamond, with limited seating still available for its 6 p.m. sitting on the field.

The unique dining experience is just the latest idea involving food to lure fans back to the ballpark during a pandemic.

“It’s been a source of revenue for us which you know is certainly something that’s been challenging during this time with no baseball,” Lawrence said. “we’ve learned a lot from this year. We’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.”

And if Thursday’s event is successful, the Red Sox are open to hosting diners again in the future.

“I think for this year, we’re going to do it as long as the weather allows us. I can see us doing it into late October.”
