KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WFXR) — Roanoke advanced to the SPHL President’s Cup semifinals for the second time in franchise history after defeating top-seed Knoxville, 3-1, in a decisive game three of their first round series.
Gehrett Sargis and Mac Jansen scored early for the Rail Yard Dawgs to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead. Stepan Timofeyev scored a power play goal to get the Ice Bears back within one heading into the second period.
Nick Ford scored the insurance goal near the midway point of the second period for Roanoke to give the Dawgs a 3-1 lead. Roanoke kept Knoxville scoreless the rest of the way, thanks in part to Sammy Bernard’s 27 saves in goal for the Rail Yard Dawgs.
Roanoke will play the Huntsville Havoc in the semifinals with Game 1 set for Thursday night at the Berglund Center.
