Patrick Henry sets sights on girls lacrosse state title

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Patrick Henry girls lacrosse team will compete for a Class 5 state championship on Tuesday night against Douglas Freeman in Roanoke.

“Every game I’ve been saying is ‘Girls, you have to play like this is a state championship.’ because that is where we want to be,” head coach Kate Spyhalski said. “We made it to state semifinals before, these are going to be amazing teams as we move forward but I feel like we’re coming off huge momentum swings and they’re going to be ready.”

The Patriots are coming off an emphatic 18-4 win over Albemarle in the region 5D championship last week. That’s when Savannah Derey joined the 200-career goal club.

Now the senior attacker looks to lead her team to a state title this week.

“We have really from Day 1, our goal has been to win a state championship this year because we know that we can do it,” Derey said. “We know we have the skill. We know we have the mental capacity to continue to play our game.”

First draw is set for 6 p.m. at Patriots Stadium.
