LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Lynchburg Hillcats continue to find success on the diamond. The Hillcats earned the Carolina League North Division first half title in a tie-breaker over the Salem Red Sox. “I feel really good about it and especially with this young team. I mean it’s the youngest team in the league so we had some great things comes out of the dugout and out of that clubhouse. Good energy and and they come ready to play everyday and everyday they want to win,” said Lynchburg Hillcats manager Omir Santos.

Win is exactly what Lynchburg did – they defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds in two games to claim the Carolina League north crown. As the Hillcats begin the second half of the season – consistency is the name of the game. “That’s what we talk about in the clubhouse. I mean keep it together. We won the first half but we have a long way to go you know so keep knowing that it’s important to win the games coming up too,” said Santos.

Not only were the Hillcats in a must win situation – there were also four teams within a game to be in first place. For manager Omir Santos – coaching his young squad this season has been rewarding. “They come out here to play everyday. Just keeping them engaged everyday I have to have good energy like them sometimes I’m a little bit tired but I have to keep up with them so they know I have their back,” said Santos.

As the Hillcats begin the second half of the Carolina League season – they’re hoping they’ll finish the year playing for the Mills Cup. “I’m very excited for them and as you can see a lot of guys have been playing for a long time and never get into the playoffs and a lot of these guys are in their first year this is their first long season so it’s really exciting to see,” said Santos.
