ANN ARBOR, MI(WFXR) — Liberty’s Charlotte Vaanhold scored the game-winning goal in double overtime, giving No. 9 Liberty a 3-2 victory over No. 5 Maryland on Friday in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship Final Four at Michigan’s Phyllis Ocker Field Hockey Field.
Vaanhold’s goal, her second of the day and ninth of the season, came on a feed from Jill Bolton at the 78:33 mark. Vaanhold lifted a forehand shot over Maryland goalkeeper Noelle Frost and into the top of the goal for the game-winner.
Liberty improves to 20-2 on the season and will head to its first national championship game in school history at the Division I level. The Lady Flames extend their winning streak to 17 games. Maryland’s season ends at 15-7. Liberty’s victory over the Terrapins was its second straight top-five win.
Liberty will face Northwestern in Sunday’s national championship game. This is a rematch of the Sept. 7 game between the Lady Flames and Wildcats at the Liberty Field Hockey Field. Northwestern edged Liberty 4-3 in that contest in what was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
