SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — The Salem Red Sox saw its season come to an end after letting a 6-1 lead slip away against the Delmarva Shorebirds, losing 9-7 and eliminating the Sox from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season.

Delmarva scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead. After Salem scored on a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at seven in the bottom half of the sixth, Billy Cook’s home run in the top of the ninth made the difference.

As a result of Salem’s loss to Delmarva, the Down Hill Wood Ducks advance to the Low-A East championship series after their 5-2 win over Charleston. The Wood Ducks will host the River Dogs in a best-of-five series starting on Tuesday.

Salem’s season ends with a 71-49 record, finishing in first place of the Low-A East North Division.
