DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — We’re just 48 hours away from the official debut of the new summer collegiate baseball team – the Danville Otterbots. For first year skipper and former major league baseball star Desi Relaford is ready to bring his experience to the new ball club.
“I love coaching it’s therapeutic to a degree but it’s also in my wheelhouse. I played professional baseball for 17 years 11 in the big leagues it’s in my blood and having a bunch of eager kids that are looking to me to give them some direction there couldn’t be anything better,” said Danville Otterbots manager Desi Relaford.
Gone are the days of the Danville Braves. The new Appalachian League product is now designed for rising college freshmen and sophomores. Coach Relaford is ready for the challenge.
“These kids have pro potential and just like the guys who played here prior to them they were at this point sometime in their lives at some point. Most importantly we’re trying to get these kids to a level to where they’re going to be professional prospects,” said Relaford.
With a new look, culture, and brand identity one thing for sure is that Thursday night the Otterbots are also excited to have their fans back in the stands. “I want the fans to come and watch these games and get behind them, I know the community here has been missing it for a year so hopefully their excited as well,” said Relaford.
With preparations underway for opening night against the newly revamped team the Pulaski River Turtles, coach Relaford hopes to only win but to train future major league stars.
