BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Even after COVID-19 canceled the 2020 season, Auburn girls tennis found its way back on top of Class 1 as the Eagles captured their third straight state title.
Auburn swept Rappahannock, 5-0, in the team championship at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at Virginia Tech.
While the Eagles didn’t need to compete in doubles to decide the title, the matches were closer than the scoreline showed.
Auburn junior Ashley Parsons clinched the title after defeating Virginia Trible in straight sets (6-2, 6-0).
“She was really tough and I’m so grateful that she was so kind to me. She was just a really fun girl to play,” Parsons said. “It was really close. We were tied for most of the points so I just had to push through that but we were really closely matched even though it might not appear that way on paper.”
The win marked Auburn’s fifth state title since 2015, an achievement in itself despite the low participation numbers head coach Conrad Nestor had this season.
“It only takes six, at the minimum, and I had six good ones and then two good ones coming along to back them up so that was very small numbers compared to the fifteen I will get in an average year,” Nestor said.
Auburn’s not done yet as the Eagles chase more hardware this weekend at Virginia Tech. Sara Nichols and Anna McGuire will compete in the state doubles tournament on Friday while Nichols will chase down a state singles title on Saturday.
“I keep it in perspective. I tell them from day one that this is just a game. We want to have fun and smile,” Nestor said. “It’s been a proven fact that if you smile more, you win more.”
