Liberty set to clash with James Madison while Hokies sent west for NCAA softball regionals


The opening weekend of the NCAA softball tournament will feature a clash of in-state foes in Knoxville, Tennessee while Virginia Tech will begin its road to Oklahoma City out west in Tempe, Arizona.

ASUN champions Liberty will meet Colonial Athletic Association title holders James Madison in the opening game of the Knoxville Regional on Friday at noon in a game that will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Tennessee was selected as the No. 9 seed and will play Eastern Kentucky in the second game on the first day of action.

The Dukes are making their eighth straight NCAA appearance while the Flames are in the tournament for the first time since 2018.

The winner of the double-elimination regional will face the winner of the Columbia (Mo.) regional the following weekend.

The Hokies will play BYU in the opening game of the Tempe regional on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be streamed on ESPN3. Arizona State, the host school, plays Southern Illinois in the other match-up on Day 1.

Virginia Tech is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament.
