TEMPE, Ariz. (WFXR) — Virginia Tech softball advanced to the winners bracket after defeating BYU, 5-2, in the opening game of the Tempe regional.

After Rylee Jensen scored the opening run with a solo homer in the first inning, Kelsey Bennett tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo bomb of her own. Bennett added a single in the third to give the Hokies the lead for good. Addy Greene and Emma Ritter drove in runs in the same frame to extend the Virginia Tech lead. Jayme Bailey added an insurance RBI in the fourth with a double to left center field.

Hokies pitcher Keely Rochard threw a complete game and left the tying Cougars run at the plate. The ACC pitcher of the year struck out seven batters and allowed three hits and two runs.

The victory marked Pete D’Amore’s third NCAA tournament win since taking over the Hokies in 2018. It’s also the first since becoming a dad last Saturday to a baby boy.
