The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team hopes to advance out of the NCAA Round of 16 for the second time in four seasons.
The Hokies are set to face Stanford Sunday night on the West Coast with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.
“I’m not really excited to go all the way across the country but I think they have some excitement in that,” head coach Mike Brizendine said. “It’s good to be young. Your body adapts, you can deal with that. When you get old, traveling across the country is no fun.”
VT is coming off a 4-1 win over New Hampshire last weekend in Blacksburg, setting up Tech’s first ever meeting with the Cardinal.
“We have a single focus in that we want to win and advance. I’m not thinking about the past or the future. It’s Stanford and what they bring and how we’re going to defeat them,” Brizendine said. “Obviously, the vibe is good so that’s the other piece. And we’re coming off a good win and so I think the guys are excited.”
Last season, the Hokies were upset in the third round by James Madison, 3-0. Kickoff for Sunday’s game at Stanford is set for 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
