ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — On the morning of May 25th at the Roanoke Country Club, the Don Holliday Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament Board of Directors named their 37th scholarship winner.
This year, it is recent William Byrd High School graduate Garrett Sexton. Sexton is going to major in engineering at Virginia Tech. Sexton played for the Terriers golf team as well as helped Habitat For Humanity.
The scholarship is administered by the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame, which awards a 4-year, $30,000 scholarship to a deserving boy or girl from Southwest Virginia who also has an interest in golf each year.
“Don Holliday sounds like an excellent person to be put up under that honor along with the previous winners. It is an honor I hopefully live up to and everyone else that has come before me,” said Sexton.
“It is great to give back. You see the excitement on their faces and you see the excitement on their family and all that. You know you are helping them fulfill helping them go to college as they follow and do whatever field they want to study it is pretty cool,” said Justin Ditmore a member of Don Holliday Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament Board of Directors.
The annual Don Holliday Memorial Scholarship Tournament is set for October 14th at the Roanoke Country Club.
