ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Patrick Henry High School athletic field house has been years in the making.
When the new Patrick Henry High School was completed in 2007 it included an on campus football stadium but no field house. After years of having the home and visiting teams dress inside the school and walking through a crowed parking lot to get to the stadium it became a growing situation on the need for a field house. Fast forward to last June when the Roanoke City Council approved the construction of the two story field house on the football stadium’s south end at a cost of $2.4 million. Construction started last October with the building set to be fully completed at the end of next month.
Patrick Henry athletic director Patty Sheedy has been with Patrick Henry since 1990. First as the head girls basketball coach then volleyball coach and now athletic director. When she started at PH, home football games where played at the old Victory Stadium. Today, the Patriots are playing games on campus.
It has been this way since 2007. Now Sheedy is excited about the new addition to the school’s athletic complex, a field house which will not only be for varsity and junior varsity football in the fall, wrestling and cheerleading during the winter, and baseball, softball, boys and girls soccer and lacrosse teams in the spring. the building would also provide bathroom facilities for the softball field.
“You have this amazing facility and the only thing missing is a field house to put the final piece to it. I think by far it is the prettiest stadium at any high school in the state of Virginia. Adding a field house which in corporates pretty much everything we have and it gives our wrestlers a home. It gives our baseball and softball teams a chance to be productive during the winter. it is going to make all of our programs stronger,” said Sheedy. With the facility close to being finished, the Patrick Henry Athletic Boosters Club is going to work to raise $150,000 for some of the much need equipment inside of the field house.
“Such as wrestling mats, batting cages and washer dryers. Things like that we need there. The actual frame and building all of the stuff with the lockers have all be taken care of by the school board. We have been incredibly happy we were able to get to the school. They have really put out an A plus project. We are excited to get to it at the end of July. Our wrestling team have been working out of Raleigh Court, ever since our new building was built. We were appreciative of the opportunity to use that facility. But the opportunity to have something new that they can call theirs. They can spread out as our program has increased. We needed a bigger space. We need new wrestling practice mats to put into this location so that we can be very successful,” said Sheedy.
Sheedy said the excitement in the community is there for the new field house. “I have met with some parents as their kids are not quite at the high school level yet and they are so excited it is going to be done for their kids they will be able to use it. So that is the piece that is so exciting just to see the looks on their face they are so happy to have a facility like this,” said Sheedy.
The PH Athletic Boosters club is raising money for the equipment needed for the inside of the field house.
